It’s a good day to talk about the health benefits of marshmallow root.
It’s one of those ornamental plants that are also an herb with many uses.
You can also call this herb as Althaea Officinalis or marsh-mallow. It’s found more in Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia.
This is my list of the health benefits of marshmallow root. I read and collected all of these online.
1. Marshmallow Root Aids In The Remedy Of Sore Throat
For many years, people used marshmallow root as a good home remedy for sore throats.
It’s said that this herb contains compounds that are antitussive which can help relieve the causes of irritations in your throat.
2. May Aid In Some Respiratory Problems
As mentioned earlier, marshmallow root can help you with your sore throat which is a part of your respiratory system.
In a way, this herb can also lessen the symptoms you experience with bronchitis and severe cough.
3. Marshmallow Root Aids In Relief Of Some Digestive Disorders
Marshmallow root contains compounds that can help you relieve certain digestive disorders like bloating, heartburns, and stomach ulcers.
Drinking a cup or 2 of marshmallow tea can do the work.
If you like to make it a more potent concoction, you may also want to add some ginger and peppermint oil.
Marshmallow root is also able to help you prevent leaky gut syndrome.
This is when small particles go outside through small openings in your gut lining.
This can be dangerous because it can cause autoimmune reactions in your body.
4. Has Antibacterial Properties
Marshmallow root has compounds that have anti-bacterial properties.
This is good for treating and speeding up the process of healing of wounds like burns.
It can also deal with different bacterial infections.
Drink up your marshmallow root tea if you have symptoms of bronchitis, respiratory tract infection, tonsilitis, or urinary tract infection.
5. Marshmallow Root Aids With Skin Problems
Besides how marshmallow root speeds up the healing process of wounds, there are more things it can do for your skin.
If you have allergies in your skin, this herb can help lessen the chaffing, itching, redness, and swelling.
This is because marshmallow root has anti-irritant qualities.
In addition, this herb also has anti-inflammatory properties which can help you with skin conditions like dermatitis, eczema, and furunculosis.
If you want to know another herb that can help you with your skin health, check out catnip. Here’s an article about catnip’s health benefits.
6. Aids With Heart Health
There is a study from 2011 that showed marshmallow root has anti-inflammatory properties that can fight acute and chronic inflammations.
Both of which can cause heart disease.
It’s been also found out that this herb has antilipidemic abilities which can result in an increase of your good cholesterol levels.
This also contributes to better heart health.
7. Marshmallow Root May Aid With Kidney Health
There are studies that show marshmallow root as a natural diuretic.
This means that it can promote the secretion of urine out of your body.
A regular and healthy release of urine can help your kidneys flush out unwanted waste and toxins in your body.
You could say that marshmallow root is a good detoxifier to this effect.
8. Aids With Hair Health
If you’re experiencing dry and heavy, you can try a natural way of treating this through the use of marshmallow root.
You can use marshmallow root oil as a conditioner to make your hair shinier and softer.

Because marshmallow root has antibacterial properties and contains antioxidants, it can be said that it can help improve your body’s immune system.
Not to mention that it also contains nutrients that contribute to your body’s immune system.
It’s also a good thing to note that marshmallow root helps in a lot of ways to keep your gut healthy which is a big factor in your body’s immune system.
11. Marshmallow Root Has Anti-inflammatory Properties
We’ve mentioned marshmallow root’s anti-inflammatory properties a couple of times already.
This quality can also help with arthritis and irritable bowel syndrome.
It also works well with inflammations in your gut which can cause acid reflux, constipation, diarrhea, or gastric ulcers.
12. May Aid In Managing Diabetes
There are some researches that tell you that there is potential in marshmallow root in lowering blood sugar levels.
It seems that it can help in regulating the release of insulin and glucose in your body.
It’s a good way to prevent irregular spikes and drops in blood sugar.
I was first intrigued if marshmallow root was the source of the soft marshmallow candy that we eat.
And it turns out that it was the origin of it. But apparently, they don’t use this plant to make the marshmallows in the market today.
Anyway, what do you think of the health benefits of marshmallow root?
The anti-inflammatory properties of this herb do a lot of things so this is an easy pick for me.
Like all the other herbs, spices, and plants in my blog, please check first with your doctor or medical professional if you’re thinking of consuming it.
I would do the same.
