Unlike its first 5 letters which is a name of a fruit that virtually everyone knows, Mangosteen fruit is not so popular even in the US. In fact, prior to October 2007, the fruit was not allowed in the US because it was considered a haven for Asian Fruit flies.

The Mangosteen fruit originated from Southeast Asia and therefore is more popular in Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Malaysia and of course in some areas in Africa. The fruit is easy to recognize because of its distinctive appearance including its purple color and of its flavor.

Apart from the appearance and color, the several health advantages of the fruit have led to its increasing use and reputation over the years and it is sometimes referred to as the queen of fruits. In fact, for its health properties, the fruit has been recorded to have been used since the 18th century in a number of Asian countries.

  1. I buy the fruit when available. Aside from the distinct taste, I buy them because of their health benefits. The husk (or shell) I don’t throw out. Instead, I put them out in the sun to dry and then boil it to make a tea. I don’t know if it is true but it is believed that mangosteen tea is a cure-all.
