Damiana is a shrub that’s filled with numerous health benefits. It’s also called turnera diffusa.
I’ve created a list of the health benefits of damiana which I’ve searched and collected online.
1. Damiana May Be An Aphrodisiac
There are historical claims that damiana is able to increase your libido.
One of the theories behind this is that the shrub promotes blood flow to the regions of the genital.
Some also think that this is because it’s able to suppress the activity of estrogen.
However, research in trying to prove these are only done on animals.
2. May Help With Anxiety And Stress
It is said that in Germany, damiana is used for different symptoms of nervous disorders and stress.
There seems to be a compound in this shrub that has a calming effect in the nervous system.
This certain compound seems to have anxiolytic properties, which gives damiana the relaxing effect in your body.
Mayans and Mexicans use damiana to enhance their moods. It’s noted that it has a mild euphoric effect on your mind.
3. Damiana Enhances Digestion
You can consume damiana if you’d like to improve your digestion.
It helps with the breakdown of fats and sugars in your digestive system. It also improves the absorption of nutrients from the foods you eat.
Damian’s mild laxative effects may also treat your constipation and indigestion problems.
4. Helps With Stomach Ulcers
Damiana contains arbutin which can treat peptic ulcers.
Researchers stated that arbutin’s antioxidant effects are what make it possible for treating these stomach ulcers.
Do you want to know another flower that may help with digestive disorders? How about checking mullein?
5. Damiana Assists In Losing Weight
Drinking damiana tea can help you lose weight too.
It has a mild laxative effect that can help stimulate the excretion of stools.
There are also studies that will tell you that if you combine this shrub with other herbs, it can produce a thermogenic effect which helps in burning fat.
6. May Aid In Urinary Tract Infections
Besides its laxative effects, damiana also has diuretic properties.
This is complemented by its antiseptic properties as well which helps fight urinary tract infections like cystitis and urethritis.
The arbutin in damiana can also transform into hydroquinone which can act as an antiseptic.
7. Damiana Contains Antioxidants
Damiana has been seen to be a source of antioxidants.
In a study with lab rats that have diabetes, researchers checked the effects of damiana in the rat’s kidneys.
They noticed that its antioxidant properties may be able to prevent damages caused by mitochondrial oxidative stress in the kidneys.
Damiana is quite an unfamiliar flowering plant to me. This may be popular though in the Southern Americas like Mexico.
You should definitely talk first to your doctor or medical professional before consuming this. I will do the same.
It’s still nice to know the different health benefits of damiana for reference purposes.
The antioxidants content in damiana is my favorite health benefit. What is yours?
